Where can I recycle my engine block?

I recently had to replace the motor in my scion tc. It's an aluminum block and it's sitting in my garage. My friend said because it's aluminum, I can recycle it and they'll pay me a decent check for it. Is he right? What are these places called? And does anyone know of one in the san Fran bay area?
