Can't get my iron shots in the air...any ideas?

Hey all, i can't seem to get my iron shots in the air. when i do hit a solid shot, it goes maybe 25 yards before hooking horribly to the left(i'm a right handed golfer). I get the feeling that i am hitting down on the ball, im not trying to crush the ball, my posture seems good(i might be a little bit too much on the of my foot, is that good?), and it seems like im standing a good distance from the ball. it seems to me that i hit it on the inside of the face when i do shank it(near the hosel). i tried standing farther away from the ball, but it doesn't work. and my grip is good so that i can see 2-2.5 knuckles. im in MAJOR need of help!
